Yeah. This is exactly my point Phil.
There is a time and a place for hard sparring, but some of the lads that train at other gyms think that its all about the brawling and knocking each other out in sparring, maybe to bolster their ego, I dont know. It ends up giving thaiboxing a bad name and people then avoid it.
I have some people training with me that have trained elsewhere and they left it for 5/6 years before coming back. It just seems a shame, so I think its important to get the right message out there.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you acquire expertise, would you consider updating your blog with more news? This will be very helpful.

I agree with your thoughts Richard on those who see Muay Thai as a sport tend to have much more success in the ring than those that just see it as a 'fight without breaking the law' or a 'good tear up',from my own experience of fighting under various rules over twenty years the skilled fighter will usually outwit the one that is just a 'fighter' who uses only aggression to win his fights.
As an example of the clubs that just spar hard all the time I used to go everywhere to get good sparring back in my fighting days, one gym in particular that I went to used to go in very heavy all the time but luckily for me I'd had a great teacher who had formed me into a technical fighter so when I took these guys on they were playing draughts but I was playing chess!
I won't name the gym because that would be unfair but these tough strong fighters could hardly touch me because I had too many sides to my game all they had was their power and aggression which will only get you so far. Many of my easiest opponents were the ones that were known for being strong and aggressive they all tried looking for the knockout and were very predictable,I would always be very careful in the early stages not to get caught but I liked to play chess and I was reading them all the time thinking several moves ahead.
I always believe that those that train hard and spar hard will only reach a certain level and then get stuck because they have nothing else to give but their strength and aggression,I train my students very hard but when they spar I like them to use good control as I feel it develops good technique and better fighting skills. If you watch the Thais sparring unlike a lot of westerners they 'play' they don't try to knock each other out and there is no 'ego',I try to encourage the same attitude at my club we all train together,we are all friends and we are all players to the game!
I have this same attitude whatever fight discipline I'm involved with whether it is Muay Thai, Kickboxing,MMA,etc I do seminars from time to time with MMA or Kickboxing gyms and I try to help them see the light and learn to play some chess!!!

Many thanks for posting this, I've been looking into this on google. I've been comparing opinions from many persons, rather than an organization web page, that's why I like blogs so much. Many thanks!
